Bird food packs carry a lot of words. Knowing how to read them helps you choose food that suits your bird. This guide explains the main parts of a bird food label and shows how to compare products, with examples from CONGO.

1. Check which birds the food is made for

The pack should say which birds it suits, such as small, medium or large birds. A mix for budgies is not the same as a mix for macaws. On CONGO product pages, the bird sizes are written in the title and description.

2. Read the ingredients

Ingredients are usually listed from largest to smallest by weight. Look for clear names such as millet, oats or dried fruit rather than vague terms.

3. Look at the pack weight

Pack size helps you compare prices and decide how long a pack will last. For example, CONGO herbal seed mixes come in 900 gm and 1 kg packs, and Fruitoze fruit pellets come in 500 g and 1 kg packs.

4. Understand claims carefully

Words like "natural", "complete" or "balanced" should be backed up by what is listed on the pack. If you have questions about a claim, ask the seller or your avian vet.

5. Check storage and shelf life

Store food in a cool, dry place and reseal the pack after use. Avoid damp areas and do not use food that looks or smells off.

6. Remember that variety matters

Most birds do best on a mix of foods, such as pellets, seeds, vegetables and occasional treats. Ask your avian vet for a diet plan suited to your bird's species, age and health.

Quick checklist

  • Is it made for my bird's size?
  • Are the ingredients clearly listed?
  • Is the pack size right for my needs?
  • Do I know how to store it?
  • Have I checked with my vet if my bird has special needs?

Frequently asked questions

Are pellets better than seeds?

Both are used by bird owners and each has pros and cons. Your avian vet can advise what suits your bird.

How long does bird food stay fresh?

This depends on the product and storage. Check the pack and keep it sealed in a cool, dry place.
